A Few Words about the Author

Sir Basil Markesinis, born on July 10th 1944, has held tenured Professorhsips at the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Queen Mary College, London, University College, London, Leiden (in the Netherlands) and the Law School of the University of Texas at Austin where he now holds the title of Emeritus Professor of Comparative Law. He has also held for a number of years part-time Chairs at the Universities of Paris I (Sorbonne), Paris II (Assas), Munich (Germany), Siena, Genova, and Rome (Italy), the Cornell Law School ,and the Michigan Law School. His 50 books and over 150 law articles and over 100 articles have dealt with miscellaneous maters such as law, the travelling of ideas, psychobiography, the classics, and art and have earned him Fellowships in the Academies of Athens, Belgium, Britain, France, the Netherlands, and Rome (Lincei) in addition to the Athens Archaeological Society and the American Law Institute as well as many honorary doctorates, e.g., from Athens, Ghent, Munich, Oxford (by incorporation) and Paris/Sorbonne. In 1997, on the advice of the Lord Chancellor, he was appointed by H. M. the Queen as one of Her Counsellors in Law and in the New Year’s Honours List of 2005, on the advice of the then Prime Minister, he was knighted by H. M. Queen Elizabeth II for “Exceptional
Services to International Relations”. For his work he has also received from the Presidents of France, Germany and Italy the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of France and Italy as well as the Grand Officer’s Cross with Star of the German Order of Merit as well as the insignia of the
Commander of the Légion d’ honneur of France.
